ADI Design Index 2016

The chair NO SMOKING by Officine Tamborrino, design Andrea Epifani, is among the selected ADI Design Index 2016, and competes officially for the next Golden Compass Award in 2018, the historic prize that signals the best designers and the best Italian design firms.

Material quality and production process characteristics have a central role in the No Smoking collection of chairs. The design is based on a system for the recycling of specially treated used paper (the mixture obtained by pulping the paper is applied to the moulds and dried naturally) which acquires considerable strength and can be used to create the chair’s structural shell. The hand crafted treatment process of the material and the variable factors related to its manufacturing make sure that every piece that is produced is different, with unique surface nuances and colour variations. In this way No Smoking is an original interpretation of the theme of sustainable production, conveying a message of ethics as well as aesthetics.

MATERIALS: CHAIR IN RECYCLED PAPER, FRAME IN METAL TUBES.

TECHNOLOGIES: PULPING OF THE PAPER AND APPLICATION OF THE RESULTING PULP ONTO MOULDS; CUTTING, BENDING AND WELDING OF THE METAL TUBES.

SUSTAINABLE PARAMETERS: A PRODUCTION CYCLE THAT WAS DEVELOPED FROM THE REWORKING OF RECYCLED PAPER FOR THE REUSING OF A HISTORICALLY TRADITIONAL MATERIAL THAT RUNS THE RISK OF DISAPPEARING FROM THE AREA. A COLLECTION OF CHAIRS AND FURNITURE THAT EXPLORES AND EXPERIMENTS WITH THE QUALITY OF PAPER USING A CRAFTSMANLIKE APPROACH, RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE RHYTHMS OF NATURE DURING ITS PROCESSING.
